Massage therapist found calling in hands-on business
-------- from The Beacon, Sunday, April 20, 2003

OCEANFRONT - Gale Gervais knows what it's like to be in pain, so she has made it her life's work to help others find relief. Gervais did massage and other hands-on therapies for about eight years before opening Alternative BodyCare in Hilltop. The business debuted just short of a year ago with one treatment room and two massage therapists - herself and Maggie Jahn. About four months ago, Gervais added a second treatment room and, by the first of May, expects to add two more therapists.
Gale Gervais     A dozen years ago, she laughed when a friend suggested massage for pain relief from a. ruptured disk and other problems caused by four auto accidents over the course of a few years.
"I knew surgery was not for me. The pain was debilitating so I was willing to try," said Gervais, 47, who was living in North Dakota at the time, working in sales and marketing. She was successful, but not really happy. "I didn't think it was important work," she explained.
Within three sessions after her friend's suggestion, Gervais was pain-free. "I knew the job satisfaction I was experiencing in sales work never came close to what I would feel if I could do the same miraculous things for people," she said. Still, she calls it "the hardest job you could ever love. It's physically demanding. People are in pain. You can't always fix things. You can't always help," she said.
Gervais, an Oceanfront resident, graduated from the Cayce-Reilly School of Massotherapy at the Association for Research and Enlightenment in 1994. After graduating, she returned to North Dakota to ply her trade, but returned to Virginia Beach at the urging of the Cayce-Reilly faculty. They wanted her to come back and teach for them.
"It wasn't hard to convince me," she said. "There was 104 inches of snow the last year before I came back," said Gervais, who still teaches in addition to operating Alternative BodyCare.
Gervais helped Jim Nienhaus, 56, who had back problems for 30 years. He couldn't even tie his shoes without his back "popping out," he said. To get around it, he bought shoes with zippers and configured a wire coat hangar with a loop to work the zipper.
Before finding Gervais, the Chesapeake resident bought two machines that would allow him to hang upside down to pop his back into place, one for at home and one for his motorcycle repair shop. That helped, but if he bent forward to turn down the car radio, for example, his back slipped out of place again. Nienhaus tried chiropractic, acupuncture and massage, but nothing worked. He eventually took the advice of his daughter, who had been seeing Gervais for recurring headaches and now has headaches only rarely.
"Right now, I'm pretty much pain free," he said. "I'm back to the gym and walking a lot. I can't say enough good things about her," Nienhaus said.
